1. Program & Description

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant

The 2022 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) round is expected to open soon. The program's primary goal is to help fire departments and non-affiliated Emergency Service organizations meet their firefighting and emergency response equipment and vehicle needs. AFG is an annual funding program.

Type of Funding

Funding assistance is provided through grants. A 95% grant would require a 5% local match in most grant rounds. Cost-sharing requirements for the 2022 grant round will be announced when the program opens.

What Will It Fund?

Protective gear including Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) units, air cylinders, face pieces, turnout gear, etc. Vehicles such as tankers, ambulances, aerial apparatus, brush/quick attach, and other fire and emergency vehicles. Also eligible for funding are washer extractors, radios, training, and equipment that protects the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

2. Eligibility

Grants are available for fire departments, nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations, and state fire training academies.
