The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act has appropriated $500 million in grant money for energy efficiency improvements and renewable energy improvements at public school facilities.

Eligible Uses:

  • Energy Efficiency
    • Building Envelope Improvements
    • Air Conditioning Systems
    • Ventilation Systems
    • Heating Plant
    • Domestic Hot Water Heating System
    • Compressed Air Systems
    • Distribution Systems
    • Lighting Systems
    • Power Systems

  • Improvements for Teacher and Student Health that achieve Energy Savings
  • Renewable Energy Technologies
  • Alternative Vehicles
  • Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Improvements

Application Priorities:

In general, priority will be given to eligible grant applicants who:

  • Have funding needs for renovation, repair, and improvements
  • Serve a high percentage of students who are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch
  • Leverage private sector investment through energy-related performance contracting

Next Steps:

An official Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is anticipated to be issued fall 2022 with more information on the application process. However, we do know the application will need to include:

  • Needs assessment of the current condition of the school and school facilities
  • Description of the energy improvements at each facility
  • Draft work plan of the intended achievements
  • Assessment of anticipated needs for operation and maintenance training funds
  • Proposed cost estimate

Widseth can assist with the preparation of the assessments, calculations, energy models, and cost estimates which will be needed for the application. The application window will likely be limited. Taking time now to be prepared will improve the quality of your application and opportunities for grant award.
